You’re off to the fitness center, what do you take with you? Workout equipment, check, water container check, fitness tracker, check. Unfortunately, a fresh study by a team at Aberystwyth University has found that popular brands of fitness trackers are overestimating the amount of calories burned by more than 50 %.
The researchers found that the trackers were inaccurate during walking and working tests. Dr Rhys Thatcher, who conducted the scholarly research, said the devices experienced an “inherent tendency” to over-measure. Dr Thatcher caused the BBC X-Ray program to check the trackers. Utilizing a mixed group of volunteers, the study measured the amount of air a volunteer used during 10-minute walking and running sessions on the fitness treadmill, before evaluating it to the stats given by the various trackers. In general, the accuracy of the trackers mixed when calculating walking or running.
The Fitbit Charge 2, coming in at £139.99 and is one of the most popular fitness trackers, only underestimated calories from fat burned when operating by 4 %. However, when measuring walking, it overestimated by more than 50 %. The Letscom HR music group, which retails at £20, underestimated the number of calories burned when working by 33 per cent and overestimated calorie consumption burned when operating by 15.7 per cent.
Alternatively, the Letsfit, also £20, underestimated the true number of calories burnt when running by 40 per cent and, while it do overestimate calories burnt during walking, it was only by 2 %. The app was redesigned to encourage users to handle activities such as a brisk walk, exercise or run class in order to earn Move Minutes points for every activity. It included a Heart Points tracker also, to encourage visitors to do activities that get their heart pumping.
